The Digital Space Programme is an on-going series of sound and multimedia projects, commissioned through Lovebytes. Digital Space was initiated to investigate the ways programmers, multimedia developers and musicians may share common ground through their use of computers.

In the first phase of the Digital Space Programme Lovebytes commissioned new work by 25 artists from around the world. Where possible the work was produced in residence at the Lovebytes Media Lab in Sheffield.

The invitation to submit work was advertised internationally via the internet in July 1999, aiming to attract applications from new and established artists, especially those wishing to work collaboratively or diversify their working methods.

Artists were selected on the basis of the originality of their proposal, their aspirations for the project, their innovative use of digital technology and the relevance of their work to the project as a whole. The variety of applications went some way to determining the overall feel of the project and this is reflected in the final selection.

The Audio CD collection is just a taste of the way digital sound processing is becoming a common factor among artists from diverse backgrounds and previously unrelated areas of music.

This Multimedia CD ROM contains work by artists who are experimenting with sound-led multimedia incorporating, interactivity and generative processes.

We are seeking to tour the commissions internationally later in the year.

The next round of Digital Space commissions will concentrate on bringing digital sound artists, visual artists and multimedia programmers to work more closely together and will include site specific installations and on-line projects.
