Static
Derin Seale - Australia 1999 (12')

Static revolves around our own perception of reality and the world of those who construct and control it. It was commissioned through a scheme by the The Youth Music Australia - supported by a legion of film, music and business organisations - along with a feature and two other short films. The scheme aimed to match composers with film makers to foster a greater culture of understanding music in film.

The opportunity inspired Derin Seale, a graduate of the University of Technology, Sydney, to write Static. His idea was to make it short on dialogue and allow the music to communicate. "It's almost retro - like silent films, where there was much more interaction with the audience and the music," he says. "For a film-maker, music is like tangible emotion - you can turn it on and off, so even silence becomes a powerful, dramatic tool.

"Music is often internalisation. So Static is about the last few moments at the end of a young man's life - his psychological breakdown when he detaches from his body and just lives in his mind."

Shot by his father, the Oscar-winning cinematographer John Seale, Static is "a moody, atmospheric piece based in spaces more than dialogue", it is scored by Queensland-based Steven Baker.

Fennesz 'Aus'
SKOT (4')

Christian Fennesz started his career as the singer/guitarist/songwriter in the group Maische, one of the more interesting bands to occupy the Viennese underground during the late eighties. With their demise in 1993, Fennesz rethought his approach to return in 1995 with the 12" EP "Instrument" on the Austrian electronic label Mego. Having freed himself of the constrictive band format he was able to freely experiment with new electronic means and a whole new audience. Since then he has released an EP on Syntactic records and a full length CD for Mego entitled "Hotel Paral.lel" was released in 1997.

Pita 'iii'
SKOT (1'02")

Peter Rehberg started the use of Pita moniker in early nineties, as a DJ playing ambient/experimental sounds in so called chill out rooms. This period of social activity bore the fruits which led to the setting up of the Mego label, and the serious start to recording his own music.

Current activities include running the Mego label and MDOS mail order, and the irregular Johnny YesNo nights, recording, and still DJing but now being more interested in the sonic possibilities of the CD glitch rather than the vinyl scratch or tape collage.

watch

Farmers Manual Live in Stockholm
SKOT (6'56")

During their performance Farmers Manual seek to shift the local atmosphere from dissolution and clumsiness through manual change and ecstatic fiddling into an imaginative state of complex monotony or endless associative babbling. Towards the end the authors become the audience and the audience is confronted with a stage populated only by machines, which can't get out of infinitely rendering a stream of slight semantic madness. The set up then is what is normally considered a sort of installation. All this is done with the help of extreme frequencies and distorted digitally generated images.

In addition to performing lots of buzzing, cracking and beeping sounds that come along with blocky, non-anti-aliased, flickering images, Farmers Manual put out lots of buzzing, cracking and beeping sounds on CD, which may also contain lumps of computer readable data.
