A Grand Affair is a multi-media installation about relationships; relationships with each other and with our best loved friends, our animals. The work is centred around a double bed, where a naked man and giant black poodle lay side by side. Both characters have been recorded in separate spaces but mixed digitally, so at given moments, as they toss and turn, the relationship builds up between the two figures, creating a merging of identity and form. Sound echoes around the space, the recognisable sensation of movement created by a sheet being thrown into the air, the sounds of restless sleeping and the distant noise of suckling - a reference to the she wolf in Romulus and Remus mythology. A Grand Affair is intended to ask questions about our own relationships to each other. Often this is hidden through the transfer of emotion from human to animal. At what point can we draw a line between human and animal values and why is it acceptable to publicly express love towards an animal but not other humans. How far can we go? The transfer of emotion from human to animal is at the heart of A Grand Affair. the concept of a sharing of affection and ÔloveÕ between a higher and lesser being provides a powerful blanket which is able to cover and hide all our inner weaknesses and foibles.
