"In The Club" is an interactive installation which uses gossip between three
artists about love, sex, emotion and passion as a metaphor for the language
of new digital technologies. The gossip aims to make explicit the use of coded language in order to establish territories and create relationships of power. The new language associated with digital technologies is exclusive. It acts as a barrier between those `in the know' and those not. Territory can be defended without recourse to physical exclusion. The similarities between these coded languages and the form and content of "In The Club" bridge two traditionally disparate arenas. It can be used to decode both environments. This piece of work aims to examine how coded language is used to both encourage and protect power relationships, to create barriers and to prolong traditional stereotypes which establish and promote inequalities. |
